The existing Davis Street Arts and Academics School was built in 1918 with additions in the 40s and 50s. The existing school was razed to make way for a new 81,000 SF, state-of-the-art facility. Some of the notable spaces include a “black box” performance space, converted to an open dance studio, a music suite with spaces for band, vocal and string programs, and an art room. A full media center, gymnasium, kitchen and cafeteria were included in the design for the Pre-K through eighth grade school. The design also included 54 parking spaces, bus and parent drop off areas, an athletic field and a playground.
The challenge was to design a large facility that would not overpower its residential neighbors. This was accomplished by building into the slope of the site using residential scale design elements and materials. The goal was to replace the existing facility with an environment conducive to academic enrichment meeting the needs of this tight-knit inner city community.
The project was completed in 2011and designed to LEED silver equivalent complying with the City of New Haven’s stringent high performance building requirements.
