Research Parkway Linear Trail

Meriden, Connecticut

To improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity and create safer, more accessible transportation options for residents, the City of Meriden developed the Research Parkway Linear Trail, a 2.1-mile multi-use corridor connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and community destinations along Research Parkway.

Funded through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program and administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation Local Roads Unit, the project includes construction of a 10-foot-wide paved shared-use trail, new sidewalks to close gaps within the existing pedestrian network, roadway safety enhancements at intersections and driveways, drainage and low impact development improvements, landscaping, trailhead parking areas, and accessibility upgrades that meet ADA and PROWAG standards. Entry gateways at each end of the trail and interpretive signage further enhance the user experience while highlighting sustainable stormwater management features incorporated into the corridor.

BL Companies provided land surveying, transportation engineering, and landscape architecture services during design and supported the City during construction with full-time construction engineering and inspection services. Working closely with project stakeholders, BL’s team oversaw construction activities, utility coordination, materials testing, traffic control, payment reviews, change management, and project closeout in accordance with CTDOT requirements.

The Research Parkway Linear Trail provides a safer, more connected transportation corridor that encourages walking and bicycling, strengthens links between communities, and enhances quality of life for residents and visitors throughout the region.
