BL Companies surveyed, studied, permitted, designed and supervised the construction of the renovation of the existing Air-Rights Garage, which was not functioning in terms of security, signage, traffic control and lighting. The project was a joint venture whereby Yale University contributed the capital costs and the New Haven Parking Authority operates and maintains the facility.
This project was unique in that the garage is built directly above the multi-lane State Route 34. An innovative access design provides direct ingress from and egress to Route 34. Ingress occurs via a modification of the eastbound on-ramp and the placement of a cantilevered highway sign. Other significant design elements of this project included lighting, landscaping, security systems, drainage and the structural design of steel stairs.
The firm performed preliminary studies for access and layout arrangement. Following these studies, BL Companies prepared detailed design drawings and a comprehensive site access/traffic impact study for review by local agencies and the Connecticut State Traffic Commission. Following the procurement of all permits, BL Companies assisted Yale University in the bidding process and performed full-time inspection services during construction.
