Join us for a behind the scenes look at how difficulties of developing along the Gowanus Canal were overcome in order to create the first and most innovative Whole Foods Market to-date. The talk will be followed by food and drinks overlooking the Manhattan skyline

Located in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, many view this location as a catalyst for the current redevelopment underway along the canal. Throughout the planning process, the project team worked with the local community to assure current and future needs were met, while transforming the industrial legacy of the site into a LEED Platinum Certified project. Through energy-efficient design, a rooftop solar array, and a combined heat and power system, this former brownfield site is 60% more energy efficient than an average grocery store. The presentation will cover challenges found while developing in Gowanus, including zoning, contamination, wetlands, waterfront development, and flood plain issues.
